The fifth and final season of Misfits will premiere on E4 on Wednesday October 23rd at 10pm, it has been announced.

Created by Howard Overman, Misfts follows a group of young offenders sentenced to work in a community service programme, where they obtain supernatural powers after a strange electrical storm. The final season marks the first anniversary of the storm and a support group forms on the estate for those people who find having a super power isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Like the ability to knit visions of the future, or to shag unwanted powers out of other people or to transform into a turtle. And as Dark Rudy likes to talk-slash-moan, it should come as no surprise that he is the first of our gang to start attending. And it’s here that he sees a very different future facing the team – one which could change things forever. The dramedy series is produced by Clerkenwell Films and stars Joseph Gilgun, Karla Crome, Nathan McMullen, Matt Stokoe and Natasha O’Keeffe.

TVWise’s UK Premiere Dates page has been updated with this new information.

Pathé, BBC Films, the BFI and Proud Films announced last week that the Calamity Films production PRIDE will start principal photography on October 7.

Directed by Tony Award winning theatre director Matthew Warchus (Matilda: The Musical, God of Carnage), PRIDE will star Bill Nighy (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) and Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake) and include Dominic West (300, The Wire), Paddy Considine (Dead Man’s Shoes) and Joseph Gilgun (This Is England). Newcomers on the movie will be Ben Schnetzer (The Book Thief, Posh) and George MacKay (How I Live Now, Sunshine On Leith).

The screenplay, based on a remarkable true story, has been written by Stephen Beresford, whose debut stage play, The Last of the Haussmans (starring Julie Walters), was a critical and commercial hit at the National Theatre in 2012.
It’s the summer of 1984 – Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support.

But the activists are not deterred. They decide to ignore the Union and go direct to the miners. They identify a mining village in deepest Wales and set off in a mini bus to make their donation in person. And so begins the extraordinary story of two seemingly alien communities who form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership.

According to the credits, “Tennis,” screening at 5 p.m. today, is based on a true story.

They don’t say it’s based on an incident that happened to writer-director Alastair Gourlay’s mother.

“Tennis” is about a woman who encounters a man burglarizing her home. The burglar and woman begin talking and discover they’re both trapped by their life choices. The burglar, Jerry, is an educated man who feels “formless.” Drugs, he says, are his way out of the shadows. The victim, Mary, says she’s trapped in an unsatisfying marriage. But she chooses to live with her choice.

Mary learns of the burglary in progress when a tennis ball mysteriously rolls into her kitchen. Tennis then becomes a metaphor for the back-and-forth volleys of their dialogue.

In reality, Gourlay’s parents have been happily married for 40 years. He’s taken some creative license with his family’s tale, and that’s what makes this back story so interesting.

Gourlay, 33, didn’t hear about the burglary in his Australian childhood home until 15 years after the fact. By then, he had film aspirations and wanted to turn it into a movie. He started writing it in 2004.

Gourlay then became involved in film financing, which led to him producing the 2011 feature film, “The Wicker Tree,” so he placed an ad on to find a co-writer for “Tennis.” Emilio Iasiello responded and Gourlay liked the way he wrote. So they volleyed back and forth by email, sending notes and tweaking the dialogue until this warm, intelligent, suspenseful film took form.

Gourlay and Iasiello never met. But the film world premieres today and then Gourlay will take it on the film festival circuit. After that, he and the co-writer he’s never met plan to write another movie.
