“Pride,” the new Matthew Warchus film based on the true story of gay and lesbian U.K. activists who raised funds to support striking members of the National Union of Mineworkers, will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival as part of the Directors’ Fortnight, according to Deadline.com.
Tony Award-winning director Warchus (Matilda: The Musical, God of Carnage, The Norman Conquests) directs the 1984-set film, which stars Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West, Paddy Considine, Joseph Gilgun, Ben Schnetzer and George MacKay.
The screenplay was written by playwright Stephen Beresford (The Last of the Haussmans).
“Pride” will be screened as the closing film in the Directors’ Fortnight series.

Today we are delighted to be able to confirm two new cast members!
We are even more pleased to be able to bring the news to you first – the people who have backed and supported Enemy of Man.
So without further ado, the two new cast members are…
Joe Gilgun exploded onto the acting scene with his portrayal of Woody in Shane Meadow’s This is England. He has since gone on to shine in Misfits as well as roles in Lockout and Harry Brown. He is a wonderful actor who brings the characters to life with an electric energy. We can’t wait to see what he does with the role of Gallow – a soldier of fortune with a pivotal part to play in Macbeth’s schemes.

An independent feature film of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth starring Sean Bean, Rupert Grint and Charles Dance.
The Lure of Ambition
Enemy of Man is an ambitious feature length retelling of William Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy, Macbeth.
This will be the feature directorial debut of actor Vincent Regan. Vincent is no stranger to Shakespeare. Although known for such films as The Messenger, 300, and Troy, he is a veteran of the Royal Shakespeare and National theaters and has directed and acted in Macbeth on the London stage.
The Enemy of Man will have a unique cinematic quality, stripping back the dialogue and cranking up the action. It traverses a bleak, frozen landscape of shattered castles and pillaged towns, rendering the interior world that clouds Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s addled minds, as they sink deeper into their heart of darkness. A timeless masterpiece of war, ambition, betrayal, murder and ultimately, revenge.
Joe Gilgun is the best mate who exists outside of the paradigm of proper friendship. Like the shopkeeper at the corner store; the lady who rings your lunch through; the barman at your local, he’s an omnipresent feature in life, friendly enough that if you really wanted, you could tell him all your secrets, but distant enough that it will never happen. Anyway, he’s here in the new video from Then Thickens, getting his face painted like he’s at a five-year old’s tea party and sitting in front of a lovely mauve backdrop. Then someone chucks flour in his face which I can imagine is a strangely comforting experience, ideal, because this song will also hold you tight like an angst-ridden snood.

The Director and writer for This Is England, Shane Meadows, says the next instalment will be the best yet.
He revealed that the latest series, This is England 90, will begin shooting later this year.
The show will follow on from This Is England ’86 in 2010 and This Is England ’88 in 2011.
It originally started life as a film, This is England, released in 2006, and many of the original cast members are attached to the new series.
The show follows the story of the coming of age of 13-year-old Shaun, a lonely boy welcomed into a gang of skinheads.
Speaking at last week’s NME Awards Shane Meadows admitted that he’d not yet finished writing the script but said he’s really excited about the project.
“The stories that we’ve got lined up for this one I think could top it all,” he said.
Its the summer of 1984 Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support.
But the activists are not deterred. They decide to ignore the Union and go direct to the miners. They identify a mining village in deepest Wales and set off in a mini bus to make their donation in person. And so begins the extraordinary story of two seemingly alien communities who form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership.
Release – 12 September 2014
Another supernatural teen drama on my list, though definitely more popular, is Misfits. The series premiered in 2009 and became popular in the US. Although it was morbid at times (seriously, these teenagers bury way too many dead bodies), it was hilarious and filled with awesome characters. Misfits follows five young offenders who are struck by lightning while performing community service; they find they’ve developed superpowers along with many other people and must deal with the consequences.
